Do Not Be Afraid

Halloween is tomorrow and many of the costumes you will see are intended to promote fear.  Many a kid, and adult for that matter, have been frightened by such scary costumes and masks.

I know Halloween is, for most people, just harmless fun. Most do not want to cause fear or panic. Yet, fear is a reality that we often face, and it doesn’t take a Halloween mask to cause it.

When fear strikes, I have often been reminded of the acronym, F.E.A.R: False Evidence Appearing Real. Just as a Halloween mask covers up the mischievous person beneath, fear often causes us to not see the reality of the situation before us. It is so easy to fall into fright first, rather than face the facts. Therefore, Zig Ziglar once said we ought to see FEAR as having two meanings:  “Forget Everything And Run,” or “Face Everything And Rise,” the choice is yours!

The greatest solution to fear, however, is found in Almighty God.  He is the great “I Am,” and the promise-filled “I Will.” God is an “I AM” and I WILL” answer to our every fear. The prophet Isaiah shared the message of God as recorded in Isaiah 41:10:

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.“

We have a reason not to fear. God is with us. We have a reason not to be troubled. God is a personal on-time God. We have the help we need when we are tempted to fear. God promises to strengthen and help. And when weak knees describe our situation, God reminds us that he will uphold us with his hand.

So, let's choose trust over fear, not just at Halloween, but in every situation for each day, as we depend on our great "I AM" God who always "WILL" be our strength.
